Paros is a hidden gem in the Cyclades, offering a perfect blend of laid-back vibes, beautiful beaches, and charming Greek culture. This island is ideal for anyone looking to relax or explore without the crowds. Whether you’re wandering through the picturesque villages of Naoussa and Parikia, catching some sun on the golden beaches, or trying fresh seafood at a local taverna, Paros has a little something for everyone.
Visiting Tips
Airport Transport
There is a public bus available which can transport you from the airport to the main city of Paros, Parikia.
Taxis are also available but we would not recommend since they are expensive.
Public Transport
There is a public bus company KTEL that drives to all the major towns and villages, although be careful because only a few stops might be regular. Other stops in smaller villages are not visibly marked so you might not know where to stand to wait for the bus. We’ve also seen a bus stop at random road on unmarked stop outside a village to drop someone off so be careful.
The timetable of public transport changes depending on the season but you can look it up here: link
Rent a car, motorcycle or scooter
We rented a scooter when we got to the island from in Parikia ferry port and we think it is the best option to explore the island. The island is not so small that you could walk anywhere but again not so big to need a car.
Most of the places on the island are about 30 minutes drive with a scooter so having one rented makes it perfect to do trips to other small villages, depending on where you stay.
And again, going wherever you want at any time is better than unreliable and unmarked bus transport.
We paid about 25€ a day for a bit stronger scooter.
In our experience everything went smoothly with renting a scooter except a little misunderstanding on how and where to return it. Just in case be careful who you rent from and take pictures when you receive the vehicle for all damages so they don’t try to pin it on you.
Where to stay
Anywhere on the island is nice to stay. Most expensive place to stay are in Naousa.
When we were searching for somewhere to stay, we found cheaper options on Booking rather then airbnb. In mid September 2023 we paid about 60€ per night in Piso Livadi.
What To See
Paros is one of the most picturesque islands in Greece. You will find more picture spots in Paros’ cobblestone streets and white and blue buildings than in Santorini. The island also has a lot of beautiful beaches.
Towns
Naousa
Naousa is a village located in the northeastern corner of the island. It has the liveliest nightlife on the island and is close to some of the nicest beaches on the island. Beautiful streets for some nice pictures.
Places to see are:
- Venetian Castle (location)
- Faneromeni (Panagía) Church (location)
- Pink door picture location (location)
Paros (Parikia)
The main town of the island with traditional cobblestone streets and white buildings like any other village on the island. It is worth while a visit to walk the narrow streets or next to the sea.
Some things you might want to see in the town:
- Panagia Ekatontapiliani - The old church dates to year 326 (location)
- Frankish Castle - Venetian castle build in 13th century (location)
- Windmill - Old windmill in the centre of the port (location)
Lefkes
The main attraction of this village is in the maze of narrow cobblestone streets that are lined with traditional white-washed houses. At the edge of the city is the Church of the Holy Trinity from the image.
St. Antonios Monastery
A monastery on the hill at the east side of the island, next to Marpissa and Piso Livadi. It is a pretty steep climb so we would not recommend hiking but if you’ve rented a car or a scooter it is worth a visit.
The view from the monastery is beautiful and if you are lucky you might meet a nice lady that comes there twice a day to open up the monastery for visitors. She offered us some water and candy when we went there. They also accept donations for the monastery if you want to give something.
It is open from 11:00 - 14:00 and 19:00 - 21:00 but it might vary depending on the season.
Beaches
The beaches on Paros are beautiful but bring a towel or something to lie on.
All of the beaches have sunbeds but they are not free, they cost 30€ or more to rent.
It is probably going to be pretty hot so bring a beach umbrella if you don’t want to pay because shade is pretty scarce.
